From the President

Welcome to Bethesda Academy!

In the end, we will measure Bethesda’s excellence as a learning institution by the scholarly and vocational excellence of our students, the professional development of our faculty, and the devotion of our graduates to lifelong learning and continued personal growth in every dimension of their lives. The investment being made in facilities and the matching investments in faculty and program development are all aimed at producing a self-confident young man of high character who is skilled in leading others and takes personal responsibility for his own learning.

Toward this end, we have recommitted ourselves to the establishment of an organization that fosters a community of trust and respect among all members. In this way, we are shaping a true “learning community,” one that encourages and supports the personal, intellectual, moral, spiritual, and physical development of students, faculty, staff, and all members of the extended Bethesda family.

Staying true to the vision of our founder, Reverend George Whitefield, Bethesda empowers the lives of young men through a focus on teaching them a love of God, a love of learning, and a strong work ethic. Since 1740, Bethesda has proudly taught boys the power of spiritual development and learning, to seek and love God, and to harness the power of God’s blessings in their lives. Whitefield dreamed of Bethesda providing a transformative academic experience as he understood the power of education to uplift the human spirit and one’s standing in life. Thus, Bethesda focuses on teaching boys how to study and to become lifelong learners, critical thinkers, and to combine academic skills with a searing intellectual curiosity.

Bethesda understands the unique learning styles of boys and utilizes active learning, hands-on strategies, experiential learning exercises, and project-based learning opportunities to provide an enhanced academic experience for each boy.

Finally, we recognize the blessing of Bethesda’s beautiful location and setting. To visit our grounds is to be inspired; to serve and learn on this magnificent campus is truly priceless. Historic, stunning, and life-changing, Bethesda is poised to build servant leaders of strong character to serve our community and nation through a lifetime of service. We are excited to develop our Leadership Academy approach combined with the Bethesda Character Development program on behalf of our Blazers.

For the Blazers,
H. Michael Hughes, Ph.D.
